When Mike Kelly turned thirteen, he asked his parents for Apple stock and got a savings bond instead. Determined to learn investing on his own, he bought a composition notebook, and filled it with everything he could find about the markets, launching a lifelong passion that would eventually take him from Salomon Brothers to learning from hedge fund pioneers Lee Cooperman and Julian Robertson.

In this episode of Masters in Business, Mike shares the lessons that shaped his investment philosophy, including the importance of conviction, adaptability and continuously "re-underwriting" your ideas as new information emerges. He also reflects on helping build Future Standard into a multi-strategy alternatives platform focused on expanding access to private market opportunities.

His conversation with Barry Ritholtz also explores the growing role of alternatives in modern portfolios, the investment opportunity in the U.S. middle market and why Mike believes the next generation of investors may need to look beyond traditional stock and bond allocations. Finally, he offers three pieces of advice for young professionals: adapt, obsess over your craft and ignore the comment section.
